Why and How To Guest Post: B2S/B2B Week 3 Guest Post

by Gigi Ross on September 26, 2010

I’m delighted to have my good friend, Alexandra at Good Day, Regular People, writing about guest posting today. She is a prolific guest poster and she has had much success with it, so definitely check this out!

———————————————————–

I have been so very lucky with how I “fell” into guest posting, and how much I have learned about it. I am enthusiastic about guest blogging and have seen how powerful it is.

WHY guest post?

* It truly is a lot of fun

* It develops your writing style

* It takes your blogging friendships to another level

* It helps build community.

There are some extra fringe benefits to guest posting, too. {Kind of like being able to eat what you want over the weekend, and still managing to lose 2 lbs. Good stuff, like that.}

 * increased traffic

* exposure to a new audience

* allows you to showcase a side of your writing (or self) that your blog doesn’t

* and -if you kick butt–gaining new followers and subscribers

I had no idea what guest blogging was when I was first approached to do it.  I had written a post on my oldest son’s piano playing.  One of my readers passed my post to another blogger, who was part of a collaborative site called Four Perspectives. Four Perspectives ran my post on their Guest Post Friday.

I was thrilled to have a post of mine published other than my own blog. It was so flattering and encouraging! It was music to my ears.

I am a hardcore believer in karma. So on the day that my piano playing post was featured at Four Perspectives, I asked my readers to visit me there, and encouraged people to submit their own guest posts to Four Perspectives for their review. I also emailed bloggers whose posts I felt would be a fit there. Gigi had one written that I thought was stellar and I suggested she submit it there for them to feature. She did, and they did.

Are you starting to see why this is exciting?

Now, it gets even sweeter. I came across another post on Four Perspectives that I felt would fit in perfectly at LOL, www.livingwithlaughter.com, the humor blog. Turns out the post was by the reader who had initially sent my post to Four Perspectives! I told him about LOL, and encouraged him to submit. He did, and LOL featured his post.

What goes around comes around. Gigi, my follower, and I all gained new followers and got to showcase our writing. That’s why I love guest posting.

Now let me move on to some tricks I”ve learned about guest posting.
1.  Think outside yourself. When you come across an opportunity to guest post that may not be for you, think about whether it’s right for another blogger you know. If so, forward that contact information to them.  They’ll appreciate it.

2.  Just ask. When you see a blog you like, email them a short, sweet note asking if you could guest post. All they can say is no. Take the risk.

3.  Use it as a test bed. If you know you want to try writing something new that your blog’s niche doesn’t allow, search out a site that will. Say, you like science fiction. Well Google,  “Guest Posting for Science Fiction,” and “Submitting Guest Post on Science Fiction,”  and “Guest Post Submission on Science Fiction.”

  4.  Utilize Twitter. Follow the tweets of a blogger you like. Some bloggers will tweet “looking for guest posts. I’m feeling very generous today.” Respond!

5.  Utilize search boxes. When visiting a collaborative blog you’d like to contribute to, enter “guest posts” in their search box: good chance that everything you need will pop up with one click.

6. Look for “write for us” and “about us” links. Many community blogs will have a “write for us” link in their top navigation bar. {Usually all the way to the right.} Also, click on “about us.”  There will usually be an email address for guest post submissions there.

7. Check out guest blogger communities. Want to take your guest blogging to a new level? There is a new site that is wonderful called MyBlogGuest.com.  They are a community of guest bloggers which aim to connect guest bloggers to hosts. They seek high quality content and a fresh perspective. Very exciting collaboration.

8. Start out small.  Exchange guest posts with a bloggy buddy. You can reach a new audience there that you are somewhat familiar with, in a niche you know well.  Consider hosting a guest post once a week at your site. Tweet it out! You’ll meet new people, and bring traffic to your site for others to meet you.

9. Bring your A game. This is the most important thing I can say about guest posting. I would not say to myself, “it’s a free post for them, I’ll just hammer this out in ten minutes.” No, no, no, no, and No.

Bring it! Provide the awesome content that will have people wanting to know more about you and follow you. Make your host proud. Make your host beam with “look what I found to show my readers!”  Be a guest, as in “guest post.”

That’s it! Good luck with your efforts to guest post!

It was so fun to Guest Post here, GIgi.

It brought back memories of the fun and excitement that came with Guest Posting somewhere for the first time, and seeing you GuestPost at 4 Perspectives and at Karen Jones’.

This series on b2s/b2b is so much fun, and I can see it all becoming an ebook, can’t you?

Thanks for having me here! I really had a good time.

kludgymom September 26, 2010 at 9:26 am

Thankyou for posting this week! I think your tips for how to guest post and why are spot.on.

You read my mind about the Ebook. I think I plan on encapsulating all of the information into a book one day.

ash September 26, 2010 at 8:44 am

You’re truly the queen (Empress?) of pay-it-forward blogging, generous Alexandra. Your comments I find sprinkled around the bloggyworld are always so heart-felt and encouraging. The blogs you guest post for are lucky to have you. Thanks for all of this great information. I might just step out of my shell : ).

Fabulous choice Gigi.

Thanks Ash, it was an obvious choice to ask Empress, wasn’t it? This is a perfect topic for her.

I agree with Ash – who better than the Empress?

I have never guest-posted and I admit I’m not comfortable with self-promoting for that. I’m a wallflower! But maybe I need to get out of my comfort zone a little bit and see..

Alexandra September 27, 2010 at 8:54 am

Cheryl, I think any blogger out there would be proud to host you as their guest poster.

Hear that, everyone???

Lori @ In Pursuit of Martha Points September 26, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Such smart words, Alexandra. I have been so flattered by the people who have asked me to write for their blogs, and it’s an excellent way to stretch your writing muscles.

And I never think about guest posts for my blog because it seems like such a weird niche for people to fit themselves into – but an emergency came up and a few friends offered to help me out with writing…and I’m so glad I took them up on their offer.

Exactly. Guest posters have helped me out when I wasn’t able to post, so that my blog didn’t become a tumbleweeds in the wind rolling through a ghostown.

Guest posters do it best.

I’m going to get T shirts made, I think.

mommakiss September 26, 2010 at 5:17 pm

All great tips! I wrote for Shell last week and it was an unbelievable response. That said, I feel the post was totally rad and I don’t k ow if I can ‘bring it’ again. I’m only one person! heh.

Alexandra September 27, 2010 at 8:56 am

Mommakiss:

Well, of course you got an unbelievable response. It’s you, after all….

Dalia September 26, 2010 at 5:20 pm

A perfect person to do a guest post about guest posting…Alexandra! She is a superb guest poster! Love all these points, Alexandra!

Alexandra September 27, 2010 at 8:57 am

Dalia, you are always so kind, and your writing is so professional.

I love your blog, and hop over to wherever you guest, because of your rep: one of solid, profound, provoking writing.

I’d be proud to host you [is that a hint? must be a hint]

Miranda September 26, 2010 at 7:40 pm

Love this post! And it’s so appropriate for me right now considering I’m actively LOOKING for guest posters to help me through the month of October! Thanks for the info, Alexandra!

Miranda, I can see why you get asked to guest post. Was just at your site, and you have a very engaging style.
No wonder, that draws traffic.

Smart people to host you.

tulpen September 26, 2010 at 8:29 pm

I’d done a few as my former blog self and loved it. Did one about cursing even! (Of course).

Probably time I try one out in my current blog incarnation.

Tracie September 26, 2010 at 9:41 pm

I have done five guest posts in the past, but all of them were initiated by the other person (because of vacations, illness, real life cropping up, etc).

I have never thought about actively looking to do a guest post. Very interesting idea and information. I’m going to have to get on top of this. Thanks Empress Alexandra!

Hi, Tracie: how are you, sweet thing?

Please do actively search out a guest post. I have done it, and not submitted my writing as from The Empress.

Just my real name. I love to write science fiction. But where could I put it on my blog, right?

I couldn’t.

Try it…nothing ventured, nothing gained.

True Dat.

Let me know, too. I”d love to hear how you tried something new to shake up your bloggy life.

Just think, I will live on in your memory forever, as your first one [sorry for the shameless flirting, but it was just too easy]

Shell September 26, 2010 at 10:05 pm

The funny thing about this is that I went to Alexandra’s blog to get her button b/c she’s guest posting for me tomorrow and I was working on getting it all set up. LOL

Alexandra September 27, 2010 at 9:07 am

Shell, thank you so much for letting me write for you. I looked forward to the topic of Friendship, and you gave me an extra day to put myself out there

Thank you, you were the perfect hostess.

How was Type A?

Natalie September 26, 2010 at 10:11 pm

Guest posting is a lot of fun, and like the Empress said, you can get exposure to an entirely new audience…it’s a win/win for everybody!

You in?

I like your tips and I totally agree! People have been coming out of the woodworks lately with wanting my to guest post on their blogs. Some blogs have small followers, some HUGE.
I consider all my guest posts another opportunity to meet NEW people…:)

How you do such a super job, with kids, I dont’ know.

Are you human?

Morgan B. September 27, 2010 at 1:25 am

Great post! I have been looking for basic information about guest posting. I am doing a guest post next month and I have been pretty nervous about it. Thanks for all the great information!

Alexandra September 27, 2010 at 9:11 am

Yay! I’ve been looking for basic info on how to start taking pictures.

Win win relationship for me and you.

Is it too soon to ship off my frienship bracelet to you? What are your fave colors?

Maureen September 27, 2010 at 2:56 am

These are really helpful and well thought pointers, Empress! Thank you for sharing them. I’m still a bit shy about guest posting at other blogs mainly because I still need to grow some more confidence that I won’t bore them to death :D

Sweet Maureen!

I almost fell out of my chair at the sight of you.

How happy I am to see you here.

And, darling, I would love for you to do a co post with me on what it’s like to be from a different country, and how different that is.

Want to? When you have more time, of course. Meantime, so dang good to see you here!

Maureen September 28, 2010 at 4:55 am

Awww, Alexandra you know I would be so honored to do a co-post with you. Would totally love it. I will shoot you an email today or tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your sweet welcome back lol sure am glad to know you didn’t fell off your chair – oops throne ;)

I did my first Guest Post this week. I wish I had have had this list before I did it lol. Actually, I don’t think I did a bad job at all, all things considered. It was a great experience writing for someone else; tayloring your style to meet the readership of the host blog but keeping true to your own voice.

I would love your thoughts on host selection though. The blog I posted on had lots of followers (320+) but not many comments. My post generated more comments for the host than most of her posts do, but they were my readers visiting her blog.

What sorts of questions should you ask yourself when perusing someone’s blog as a possible host site?
