Sex and the City and the Stereotyped Blogger

by Gigi Ross on November 13, 2011

{I run the risk of being told this post is pigeonholing otherwise uniquely authentic bloggers into stereotyped boxes. It’s just for fun, people, just for fun!}

We are all different and special. Pay $300 for any blog conference pass and you’ll learn this. Pay $300 multiple times and you’ll realize that you can make a lot of money as a speaker at blogging conferences telling people they are different and special.

But let’s face it: there are some general types of blogging STYLES.

In a moment of insomniatic inspiration, I realized that each of us – as a blogger –  mirrors one of the lovely ladies from Sex and the City.

Are You Blogger Carrie?

Blogger Carrie is a highly visual, highly creative blogger. The look and feel of her blog is of paramount importance – saying as much about her as her newest pair of Manolo Blahniks. She uses a Mac. An introspective sort, she uses her blog as a place to question her current life status and to encourage her readers to do the same, but also as a place to share the more quirky aspects of her life. Despite her best intentions, however, Carrie tends to find herself embroiled in bloggy drama with bloggers that are not a good fit with where she wants to take her blog.

Are You Blogger Charlotte?

Blogger Charlotte is everybody’s blogger next door. Her bloggy manners are impeccable; her taste, refined. She is completely baffled by technology and how blogging actually works, and yet, this blissful ignorance gives her a charming and endearing quality. She has an appreciation for savvy wit, beautiful lifestyle content and lush food photography. Charlotte cannot tolerate even one widget being misaligned on her blog, but since she does not know how to fix that sort of thing, she ends up paying someone a lot of money to do it for her. She is extremely sweet and generous with her social media time, being the first to retweet a post and share a kind word about someone. She wins any bloggy voting contest that she submits for. You wish you could hate her, but she’s just too lovely a person!

Are You Blogger Miranda?

Blogger Miranda is a blogger who lives and breathes by the written word. What surrounds the words is completely unimportant. She cares little for blog design or self promotion; rather, she uses her blog as a platform to encourage debate on controversial topics and life issues, or simply to celebrate the art of writing in its purest form. She refuses to write sponsored posts or accept advertising. She is whipsmart and sometimes stubborn. Her voice is bone-crushingly honest and sometimes cynical, but those in her inner circle have her unwavering support and loyalty.

Are You Blogger Samantha?

Blogger Samantha is the blogger who gets around. She knows everyone on Twitter. She has 1500 Facebook fans. They all seem to love and worship her. Samantha has been around the block and likes to share with her blogger friends exactly how to get things done. Whatever she sets her mind to, she dominates. But because she is so busy, Samantha has her hands in a lot of pots and has a hard time committing to one thing and sticking to it. As soon as she has conquered one aspect of blogging or social media, she moves on to the next big idea.

I’ll bet you see a little of yourself in one or more of the lovely ladies from the show. I’ll bet you also see many of your bloggy friends in the characters, too.

Which SATC woman best represents your blogging style?

Any resemblance these characters have to bloggers dead or living is entirely intentional.

You’re so totally, positively, absolutely 100% correct!

{I mean, I get that it’s all in good fun, but let’s face it. This is *highly* accurate still.}

I don’t fall into any of these categories, but I certainly work with them all. I can already point out a few in my head. ;)

I’m a girl-next-door type, I guess, but a lot of the rest of the Charlotte characteristics didn’t really fit me. But yes, my girlfriends and I have discussed which of these girls we are most like, in terms of how we operate in life, so I get what you’re talking about.

“Everyone is special.” I need a conference gig. I could sell that. (Partially because it’s true, and partially it’s because it’s what we want to hear.)

mommylisa November 14, 2011 at 3:34 am

I think I know Charlotte.

Kir November 14, 2011 at 6:15 am

I am definately Charlotte, in fact reading it , I was giggling and nodding. “I know NOTHING about the technical side of blogging”, “I just want everyone to like me” etc.

and this whole post made me smile, I love those SATC girls and this was such a great way to bring us them again for a couple of minutes. :)

Omigosh.

I think I’m Carrie.

With a little less drama.

But not every day.

So funny!

I’m not Carrie or Miranda, for sure.

LOL, did you write the Charlotte synopsis with me in mind? Because it so totally described my blogging style, it was actually a little bit eerie. (I HATE misaligned widgets!)

On the other hand, I can also see a little bit of Miranda in me in that I use my blog to celebrate writing in its purest form and care little for sponsored posts. (I’ve tried, but I just can’t get into them.)

There’s very little, if any, Samantha or Carrie in my blogging style.

Interestingly, in life I’m a cross between Charlotte and Carrie.

Loved this post, Gigi. Almost as much as I love SATC (or can you not tell?) ;)

*sigh*

Adorable post, but I’m not any of these:

no lush photographs, no controversial topics, no conquering of social media, no good lookin’ blog.

I think you need to add a supporting cast, like the neighbor who babysits Carrie’s new baby.

That’s the one.

Cute post, G.

Renee A. Schuls-Jacobson November 14, 2011 at 2:17 pm

Alexandra:

I would beg to differ! You have a fabulous website. Are you on drugs? And you are so much fun to tweet with!

Maybe in real life you feel like you are Carrie’s neighbor, but that is NOT your blog persona. ;-)

Stacey Nerdin @ Tree, Root, and Twig November 14, 2011 at 7:27 am

Ok, first of all, I need the hook-up on which conferences actually PAY their speakers. Because I spoke at 3 blogging conferences this year and didn’t make a penny (beyond having my ticket fee waived). In fact, *I* actually paid my own travel and lodging. Clearly, I’m doing something wrong here. ;)

As for which character? I have no clue, but maybe that fits in with my “no niche” tendencies?

kludgymom November 14, 2011 at 9:20 am

Ok, well that is a good point on the speaker thing (not that I would know). But I do assume that the people who speak at every.single.conference are making lots of coin doing lots of other bloggy related things because they are all famous-y. Maybe that is a bad assumption :)

Stephanie November 14, 2011 at 7:51 am

If any of them has an extreme tendency towards procrastination and a tendency to not write because she is afraid no one will read or connect, then that is me :P

I definitely can think of a few that fit in the Samantha category and some in the Carrie and a few who are very Charlottesque but can’t think of any Miranda’s.

Sadly, I think I’m the worst parts of Charlotte (technical ignorance) and Miranda (don’t care what surrounds the written word).

But at least I don’t wear dresses with flower attachments that are bigger than my head.

I mean seriously, SJP. That just looks uncomfortable.

Rach (DonutsMama) November 14, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Oh this was an awesome post! So true. I’m not sure where I fall in (Carrie? Charlotte?) but it’s funny to think of it like these girls.

Isn’t funny how inspiration comes at the strangest moments?

I think I’m a mix of Miranda and Samantha, with a dash of Carrie and Charlotte, and big pinch of the potty-mouthed Real Housewives thrown in.
