My Fitness Pal iPhone App

by Gigi Ross on July 7, 2011

Happy Friday! Woo hoo!

I’m off meeting tons of fab bloggers, repping Clever Girls as half of the #CleverDuo and learning a bunch at Evo ’11. So the fun and lovely @NaynaDub from Mommy Is In Time Out offered to be my App Girl today for App Girl Friday. She’s got a great review of a superfun fitness app. I really need to get this one and if you want to shed a few pounds before BlogHer, you should read up! Thanks, NaynaDub!

As a mom who is constantly trying to lose weight, my favorite app right now is My Fitness Pal.
However, you don’t have to be on a diet to use this app. It’s great just for simple maintenance for your healthy lifestyle.
The app is extremely easy to use. I wanted to tell you all my 5 favorite features.
1. The Ability to Share

You are able to sync this app with your Twitter and Facebook in order to share updates. Now, I don’t share every single thing that I do. I don’t think anyone wants to know the number of calories that I had for lunch or that I had raspberries for breakfast.
However, when I hit something monumental I do push it through because it’s fun to share with my friends the progress I’ve made.
2. The Date Night Overindulger

Counting calories is fairly easy at home when you’re making your own food. But, when you’re out and about, it’s a whole different story. My Fitness Pal allows you to look up menu options right at your table. While this can be a total buzzkill, it is nice to know that you’re not going to completely wreck all the hard work from that week with just one meal.
Note: Obviously this feature is typically for national chain restaurants not local independent restaurants.

3. The Friends

My Fitness Pal allows you to “friend” other people who are using this app.  You are able to see their status. Maybe they have lost a few pounds or they had a good workout. You have the ability to motivate, encourage or even offer up your cat if they’d just share their weight loss secret with you.
4. The Tracking

My Fitness Pal allows you to track everything. You set up your overall goals and it will keep track of everything for you. Weight, exercise, food. It even remembers what you usually eat so you can select from a list of frequent items. I think at one point it was being very passive aggressive and trying to tell me I ate too much tuna fish. I’ll never really know.
5. The Reminders

Yes, if you ignore My Fitness Pal it will start to stalk you via email. You will wake up in a cold sweat one morning and see that you have a new email message. You’ll look down at your tummy and know who it’s probably from. You’ll stand up, get out of bed and do the walk of shame to the bathroom scale. All the while knowing the app will taunt you until you enter the new information.
However, I’ve never ever done this. I’ve just heard from other people. I always track everything and enter items each and every day.
It’s a great app and one I would highly suggest if you want to track weight loss and exercise. If you happen to start using it, look for NaynaDub.

Thanks for an awesome review today, App Girl Nayna! You can get My Fitness Pal for FREE at the App Store. They also make a version for Android and Windows Phone! :)

Just another reason for me to get a better phone! It would be a lot easier for me to talk myself out of Dairy Queen if the calorie count was right in my hand :)

It definitely does help stopping me from hitting DQ! ;)

Now, if only Sprint would sell its soul to the iPhone powers that be, I’d be set! Great app, hope it continues to be useful in your healthy endeavors.

Excellent review Elena. The email feature is cool.

The email feature is cool. It stalks me – which is probably a good thing!

Great review Elena. I have this app, but I’ll be honest, I haven’t used it yet. Maybe now I will!

Looks like a great app!

Elena July 8, 2011 at 8:22 am

It definitely is one of my favorite apps!

Well, that’s it. I really need to get serious, NOW. Maybe if I had an app stalking me I’d stick to it for once. Or if I knew I was accountable, to a degree, to those who could see my progress (or lack thereof). Thanks for the review!

I can’t tell you how much this app has helped me stick to a new lifestyle. The sharing part is awesome for accountability, for sure!

This? Is wonderful! We always joke about our social media addictions. But see? It’s HEALTHY for us!

Seriously -love- thank you for sharing it with me! XO

It’s totally healthy for us! ;) It’s a great app – can’t recommend it enough.

It is awesome – just don’t look up info if you ever go to PF Chang’s. You’ll be sad. ;)

On my way to check out this app! Thanks for sharing!

Elena July 8, 2011 at 1:01 pm

Sounds awesome!

Wow – what timing! It’s a great app for sure!

This does sound like a sweet (and FREE – woo-hoo!) app. Definitely might give it a whirl…but I don’t think I will friend everyone – I will just embarrass myself that way ;) Great guest post – I’ll have to poke around a bit on here – I’ve never been :)

Elena July 8, 2011 at 10:07 pm

It’s a fun app Lauren! You won’t embarrass yourself – a lot of the info is kept personal. ;)

Watty July 8, 2011 at 2:36 pm

Just downloaded. Thank you! Maybe I can get into my cute jeans by my birthday in September.

Elena July 8, 2011 at 10:08 pm

I’m sure you will be in them before you know it!

Jessica July 9, 2011 at 12:19 pm

I use My Fitness Pal on a {near} daily basis and lovvvvvvvvve it!

I try to keep track of everything that I eat so that I’m more conscious of how many calories I’m consuming, which is perfect when you have this app because when DON’T you have your phone with you?!

Amanda July 9, 2011 at 2:38 pm

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been using this app for about 2 weeks. The biggest change for me was how much more I was eating than I thought. One of my friends has been using it for quite a while & she has lost over 20 pounds (with diet & exercise). She says it motivates her not to have “red” numbers (from going over your calories, etc.). I would highly recommend it!

Tonya July 18, 2011 at 6:05 pm

Oh my, this app sounds dangerous.

I may just need to get it.

Thanks for the review.
