Setting Up Your Facebook Fan Page: Tutorial

by Gigi Ross on September 4, 2010

This tutorial is going to show you how to set up your Facebook Fan (or Business) Page. Part 2 will cover how to request a vanity URL and a build a custom “welcome” page for your Fan Page.

1. Log in to your Facebook account.

2. On your left sidebar, click on “Ads and Pages.” (see screenshow below, under “Friends.”)

3. On the next screen, click Create Page button.

4. Next you’ll select what type of page to create. Select “brand, product or organization.” In the dropdown menu, choose “website.” Put your blog name in where indicated. Click the checkbox acknowledging that you are authorized to administer a page for said website, and click “create official page.”

5. The next screen you’ll get will be your actual page. Here’s where you can set up the page to contain the information you want. From here, Facebook walks you through step-by-step what you need to do. First, upload a photo (I recommend using a high-quality image of your blog badge, if you have one). Second, add some basic information about your blog. There are other options, like posting updates or sending your Facebook updates to Twitter. There are better services to coordinate posting blog items to BOTH Facebook and Twitter, so I’d recommend skipping Facebook’s Step 6.

Here’s what my final page looks like.

That’s it! You’ve got yourself a fan page! Part 2 of this tutorial will cover getting a vanity Facebook URL and building a fancy “welcome” page for your fan page. And later in our course, we’ll talk about getting your blog posts to auto-post to Facebook!

I set up a page yesterday because you told me too and I just left it empty. Now, I’m making it look pretty because you told me too.

Needless to say, I do whatever I’m told.

That does NOT come in handy in Middle School.

this one I was able to figure out alone. shocking, I know. Now will you be doing how to add social media buttons? Twitter, RSS and Facebook and maybe that Stumble thing.

If you want me to do a quick tutorial or provide you some links on social media buttons, I will work on it! it will probably not be posted until week 3, though. :)

I am excited to set up a page on my fb, however, I do not have the tab for ads and pages. Please advise this poor untechy blogger!

Email me your pagelink for FB, I’ll check it out tomorrow. You probably don’t need those tabs to start out :)

Hey,
The ads/pages button all of a sudden showed up! Yeah…I got my facebook page up. Check it out and see what needs to be done further. When I glitch up that fb page with that one program you recommended, how do I makek sure i am glitzing up my blog fb page and not my personal fb page? Is that a stupid question and does it even make sense? I was unable to upload any pages to that one site so I quit and will try again tomorrow. Thanks for being a good teacher!!

Working on my Facebook fan page now. Are there any suggestions on creating a blog badge? If I do that, how do I add to my theme in WordPress? I am so illiterate to some things :-(

I’ll try to get you some resources on making a blog badge. If you’re fluent in Power Point or Photoshop, they’re pretty easy to create on your own to start. Then you just add it to your sidebar with a simple piece of code. I’ll dig some old articles up that I used and post them to the BlogFrog when I can!

You are so awesome for writing down step-by-step instructions like this in plain English rather than *&^^(*&@*@*%$^%

Facebook is surprisingly anti-intuitive if you ask me. (Ok I know you are not asking me…)
