How To Paint a Staircase

by Gigi Ross on May 31, 2012

As many of you know, we recently bought a house in the northern part of San Diego county.

It’s a beautiful house.

Gypsies we are, so I’m probably cursing myself by saying this, but we think this is our forever house. Or at least our 10 year house, but hopefully longer.

What you might not know about my husband and I is that we flipped houses in Arizona for a few years. We spent five years in Austin hating just about everything about the inside of our house – and didn’t really have the money, the motivation, or the bright ideas on how we could fix everything we hated.

That was hard for us, because, well, we really like re-doing houses.

So we decided that, while we loved this San Diego house as it was, we would do it up the way we want to. Maybe we’ll love it so much that we shed ourselves of gypsy.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been lining up a major renovation of nearly the entire downstairs of the house…and then some…and I’ll be blogging my way through the process – our big fat renovation, if you will!

Today, I am really excited to talk about how we transformed the staircase in the house. The previous owners put in a gorgeous, and what had to be extremely expensive upgraded, staircase with wrought iron balusters.

They also added a full-oak “library” area on the second floor that has tons of bookshelves and two large desk areas with under-cabinet storage.

We didn’t really plan on doing anything with the staircase, or the library, when we purchased the house. But when we elected to put dark brown hardwood floors on the first level, it became evident that we’d have a real clash of woods with an oak staircase and dark maple floors.

{Before we even got started, we had scope creep!}

We knew this: we could NOT afford to replace the wooden parts of the oak staircase, nor did we have the time. We both love the idea of a crisp white stairboard with a dark handrail, along the lines of this:

We happened to come across some amazing painters who work for homebuilders, and contracted them to do the job. They were priced so reasonably that we decided to have them paint the entire library area white as well. We couldn’t replicate the picture exactly due to the iron balustrades, but wanted to achieve the same general look.

They spent most of Memorial Day weekend sanding the entire staircase and library, putting on two coats of primer, then two coats of paint. We used a white Behr paint for the staircase and Frazee’s Bon Nuit brown for the handrail in semigloss.

Both the staircase and the library look better than I ever could’ve imagined. Here are the preliminary shots of how it turned out.

The staircase, viewed from the dining room:

From hallway, looking into library:

From desk area of library, looking at bookshelf:

I plan to put some brushed nickel knobs of some sort on the white cabinet doors, to break up the large swath of white. And of course, once all of our books are placed on the bookshelves, it will really break up the monochrome look.

While I was prepping this post, we had a plumbing leak that should prove to be a costly time delay on our project. We’ll see how things progress.

It always amazes me how paint can just transform a space. It looks like a warm and inviting place to have your library and still the staircase is a showpiece! Good luck in the new digs.

The home we’re in now is full of wood (and I have to giggle here because I’m a child) that, when we bought it, had all been white-washed into that kind of southwestern whitish/purplish hue.

Godawful 1988.

We couldn’t afford iron banisters, so we had all the wood painted pure white. Kitchen, stairs, cabinets, linen closets.

Since then, we’ve remodeled our kitchen but the rest of the wood remains white. Now I’m thinking that the handrails painted black might bring some new awesome to our “forever” home.

Thanks for the idea…

It looks great! Beautiful home. I love the look of white built ins. We have a “house list” that we’ll get to someday. We only planned on being here about 5 years, but we DIDN’T plan on having 3 kids in 2 years.

LOVE it. I heart your bookcases!!!

When I got to about the middle my heart was screaming, “please don’t paint the wood!!!!” I’m a big fan of stained wood, but I get that it didn’t match and wasn’t the look you wanted. It does look very nice painted.

We would have preferred staining it, truthfully, but since we didn’t have our floors laid yet, it would have been difficult to stain just the right color and not be TOO matchy matchy with the floors but also not clash. This was a great compromise solution.

I love it!! We did a huge remodel on our house (adding an entire 2nd floor) and I went with the white rails and dark brown banisters and stairs. I get more compliments on my staircase than anything else. Yours looks amazing! Can you use that space under the stairs? We had a mini door put into the back of the closet that leads into the space under the stairs. For now it is a secret playroom for my youngest, even though my husband wants to claim it for storage. haha

Tremendous difference. Usually I shy away from painting wood because it can look off, but what you did looks fresh and clean! Super!

kludgymom May 31, 2012 at 10:31 am

Thanks…I have always been leery of painting wood myself. The real trick here was that the painters used two coats of primer and two coats of paint, so the grain of the oak almost completely disappeared, making it not look as painted as it might otherwise.

That staircase looked amazing before but now it’s really spectacular! Great job. Love how the trim now ties in with the door moldings etc. Really makes the stairs pop!

I can only take credit for the idea, not the work…our painters were amazing.

I love the look of your staircase! I have a beautiful curved staircase with an unattractive honey oak bannister and spindles. I just had the spindles replaced with wrought iron – and they look awesome. But now I need the handrail painted. I was afraid a dark color on the handrail with the black spindles would look too dark. But after seeing yours, I think it would look good. I am also in North San Diego county – San Marcos area. Could you share your painter’s info with me?? Thanks for posting your pics!

Wow, I love the vibrant transformation. The paint job, the staircase, and the library look amazing. I especially like how the bookshelf extends to the full length and height of the wall. It makes it feel like it’s built into the wall rather than separated against the wall. I love how lively the place looks after the paint job too. I’m glad to hear that you were able to find some good painters where you’re at. I had a similar experience when I was looking for painters in Calgary.

Love your stairs! Would you mind sharing the name of your San Diego painter? Thanks so much…
