Best Excuses for Why My Food Photography Sucks

by kludgymom on January 31, 2012

Fun fact: I originally started blogging about food. At no time did I ever intend to be writing posts about The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or the time that my kid’s room smelled like butt. I really just wanted to share recipes with my family.

I thought that was a pretty good idea until I discovered the food blogging community, at which point I realized that I was a poser in the food blogging space.  Yes, I still blog recipes I try out from time to time, because I enjoy it. But one of my biggest limitations is, and always has been, my food photography.

Those damn food bloggers offer up numerous drool-worthy shots in every post. Tender bits of flaky bread dangling above a plate. Succulent fruit parfaits in pretty glasses. They can make a bowl of OATMEAL look good. When has your oatmeal ever looked good?

I find it much easier to make excuses for my craptastic food photography than to just own my lack of mad photog skillz.

So here are:

food photography

1. My house is devoid of natural light. I’m blaming this on the fact that our house is oriented north-south, and we only one measly window that faces east-west. The interior of the house is a gloomy, gray, hazy place. Kind of like Chicago 11 months and 15 days out of the year (the other 15 days of the year, people fry their white skin in the sun until it’s as red as a fire hydrant).

2. I don’t have cool plates. Or napkins. Or pretty table linens. It’s true. My plates suck. I have solid green plates, that look gray when I photograph them in my murky light. I have red Fiestaware plates that are super reflective and shiny. I have white plates that look okay, but when I make a beige-ish food it has a camouflage effect. I don’t have those perfectly patterned dishes that look right out of Pinterest. I don’t have cool rustic bowls and soup crocks that have a vintage patina. Table linens? Why? And…we don’t have napkins. We have our sleeves.

3. I haven’t read the instruction manual on my camera. I just take 100 photos and hope one turns out. Most of the time, I am 0 for 100, due to #1 and #2 above.

4. I don’t have a macro lens. My baked goods, which are delightful in person, look like corned beef hash without the right closeup lens.

5. Instagram needs more filters. When are they going to add an In Focus filter, a Filter To Fit The Entire Shot In The Screen, and a No, Your Food Does Not Look Like Alpo filter?

6. I don’t know how to plate well. Part of great food photography is not just what the food is, but how it’s presented. I don’t know how to arrange crap on a plate all fancy-schmancy like. Listen, I’m feeding a 6’5 carnivore and two rugrats. Your food gets slopped on a plate so I can sit my ass down and eat before my food is cold. And you’re lucky if it’s not on styrofoam. Fun fact #2: I don’t know how to dress well, either.

7. My silverware has spots all over it. I may be the only person who has stainless steel flatware with – you guessed it- stains. So if I want to add a fork or spoon to my picture – you know, because that’s what the awesome food bloggers do – it looks like a piece of rusted metal in the photo. Appetizing!

8. I don’t cook in the daylight. Maybe I should start the Vampire Food Blog. All food cooked after it gets dark and all photos of said food taken under the harsh glare of artificial lighting.

9. No matter where I stand, I get a shadow.  I don’t care where I am in my house, there is always a shadow on my food photos. Because of said nighttime cooking. This is called the Goth genre of cooking.

10.  I have no good outdoor backdrops. If I left my murky house during daylight hours to take photos, the choice of backdrops would be a) dying desert plants, b) garbage cans and recycling bins, c) concrete patio, d) grass with dog poo, e) hot tub that needs servicing or f) old wooden fence that is washed out and broken. Yum!

So that’s my list of excuses. And I’m sticking to it!  How’s YOUR food photography?

Love this! I’m definitely a poser in the food world. I love to play with grain free recipes and such but there are plenty of “big bloggers” that really own that niche. I’m always surprised when I make something that turns out well but when it does, I like to share it on my blog.

As for photography, I combine a DSLR (with a decent lens), sunlight, luck, and taking 30 pictures of the same muffin and hoping one turns out well. What I know about photography, you could fit in a thimble. I have Fiestaware and Monet print China from the 90′s. I really should buy some white plates. ;)

LOL, I am totally with you. My ‘fanciest’ food photography props include a bowl my Grandma gave me and a piece of Walmart white poster-board. And I don’t have a SLR. Yet.

But it’s still fun to try. And your pic/recipes always look divine, anyway! Give yourself some credit.

Cheers.

Good food photography is unbelievably challenging. That’s why I’ve “hired” my husband.

Thank God, he’s interested in doing this, because I can’t muster the intestinal fortitude to make myself do what it takes to learn my camera.

There have been several times I’ve wanted to photograph a particular cooking process and share it on my blog. BUT, I never do, mostly because my counter space is always, always, always covered with a million things in my kitchen. When I make dinner, I literally have to push things out of the way to make a little room. So, my biggest excuse is the mess – I’d never be able get a picture without a ton of stuff in the background!

This post is especially timely as I posted a recipe last night along with a haphazard photo taken with the ol’ iPhone. I claim no photographic skills though I confess I have had my husband take pictures before because is a much, much better photographer than I am. I’m lucky if my thumb isn’t in the picture!

LOL I love this!! You have described my food photography issues to a T. My house has very little natural light and I tend to do the most of my cooking when its dark (we eat late and it gets dark early here). My plates and silverware are ugly! I still try but somehow my pictures never look as good as my fave food blogs. I try though!

I went through a phase where, at dinner, before anyone could eat their food, I went around to each plate to try to get the exact right shot. My husband would hold the chandelier in all kinds of crazy ways, standing on his chair to do so. Not only did I end up with crapola pictures every time, but the food was always cold by the time I allowed them to eat!

This is hilarious! I’m a food blogger, but I pretty much snap away and change dials on my camera haphazardly and hope one comes out too. :) I’ve gotten better with plating and food styling though, but I guess the more you do it the better you get. Darkness is enemy numero uno!

I love this post! I always found it hard to photograph food even in a studio when I was studying photography at The Art Institute of Houston. I had such a hard time getting the lighting right and like you mentioned, getting flatware without spots and dishes that really complement the food. It’s difficult! Don’t feel bad. You aren’t alone. Haha!

I have a lot of the same excuses! Zero natural light, I cook at night, when it’s dark, and I use my iPhone to take pictures. Even if by some miracle something I cook does end up looking delicious in person, in a photo it immediately morphs into dog chow. I don’t know how, it just does. I’m big on “it tastes better than it looks, really!” But seriously, how do people get CHILI to look good?

I’ve heard professional portrait and wedding photographers alike say that FOOD photography is the hardest thing of all. I love to share recipes on my blog, but for the same reason’s you mentioned above, I just don’t. My food never looks that appetizing. And if you can’t make it LOOK like it’s good enough to eat, would any really bother?

I’m, simply, too impatient . . . when I have the yummy in front of me, I eat the yummy . . . and that means that, by the time I think to take a picture, there’s already a large portion missing.

But, you’re right, Instagram needs “food friendly” filters. And zit-reducers for when I take pictures of myself.

I love this! When I do cook it is actually tasty although I hate to cook. The pictures all look like gruel / slop / you name it! I went out to dinner with a food blogger and she took gorgeous pictures of the food in a dimly lit restaurant while mine sucked. So, we might just not be at all on par with these food bloggers and their mad photography skills!

All these excuses, save the last one, apply to me as well. As for the last one, I live in Wisconsin, so it’s cold, wet and snowy for half the year, so outdoor pics aren’t much of an option. Okay, not all. I don’t have a DSLR, so I can’t complain about not having a macro lens. On the other hand, my daughter smeared almond butter all over the camera I do have (which was only two months old), so it doesn’t work very well. I’m working on this, though. I know that if I’m ever going to be a major part of the food blogging world, I need to make the most of what I have.
