Why You Need a Fairy Blogmother

by kludgymom on September 28, 2010

This is a repost of an article I wrote for The Blogger’s Concierge.

There’s one thing that EVERY girl blogger should have, and it won’t cost you a penny – just a little time and luck. Would you like to gain new followers? How about scoring guest post opportunities to increase your blog’s reach? Would you love for the chance to collaborate with other cool bloggers and improve your own writing?

Of course, this sounds terrific. But how do you do it?

The answer is simple: you need a Fairy Blogmother.

A Fairy Blogmother is the gal who is looking out for YOUR blog in the blogosphere. She’s almost like a movie star’s agent: she offers you unwavering support and encouragement, finds ways to get your name out there, and might very well believe more in your abilities than you do!

Some Fairy Blogmothers just take their role on naturally, stepping in like Cinderella’s fairy godmother without being asked. Others are pleased to take on the wand when a fellow blogger approaches them for help.

So how do you find your Fairy Blogmother? Don’t worry. You probably already have one waiting in the wings. She’s likely one of your very early followers, one of the first bloggers YOU followed, or a gal that seems to be the first to respond to your techie questions on Twitter.

Think about the people in your blogging world. Someone’s name will jump to the forefront. Ask that person if they are willing to be your Fairy Blogmother – to be your resource for help and questions…maybe help you find guest post opportunities. People who are blogging naturally WANT to be a part of a community and are flattered to be looked upon as a mentor.

On the flip side of this topic, considering stepping up to be a Fairy Blogmother yourself.  We’ve got to pay it forward, gals. Don’t feel like you have to be a seasoned professional to help someone else! But how?

*Send someone in a different blogging niche any guest posting opportunities you find

* Come up with ideas to collaborate with another blogger and write a shared post

* Forward on cool plugins you find

* Retweet posts that are really fantastic

There are as many ways to assist someone as there are people needing assistance.

I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to own my Fairy Blogmother: Empress [Alexandra] of Good Day, Regular People. Empress is one of my first bloggy friends. She sends me guest post ideas, lets me vent, acts as a sounding board, and, harasses gently encourages me to do things like write e-books and host blog challenges.

The B2S/B2B Challenge is my way of playing fairy godmother. :)

So if you’re a seasoned blogger, think about being someone’s fairy blogmother today. And if you’re a new blogger, find yourself one. I promise, you won’t turn into a pumpkin.

Gigi, you are so right in saying this b2s/b2b challenge is playing fairy blogmother. Absolutely.

Bloggers have a place to come, instead of flailing in the dark on their own.

You’ve given so many of us a sense of community, and a homeroom to check into every morning.

I know the hours and hours you’ve put in: so that what you tell us actually makes our blogging lives happier.

You may not know this, but I know how many people you help.

I also know the sincere love for your readers that you’ve put in behind your posts.

You don’t want just numbers and readers, you really want people’s blogs to reach the levels that are possible.

Thank you. YOU are my techy fairy blogmother.

Now, how many times have you heard, “Geeg, help! How do I get this widget thingy on my site???”

Remember when I lost my avatar somehow on my desktop and you retrieved it for me?

Oh, yeah, good times.

kludgymom September 28, 2010 at 9:27 am

Aw, Empress. Thank you. i will always be your backup tech support when hubs is not around :)

It has been extremely rewarding to do this challenge and feeling like I am helping people. A lot of work, but well worth every minute.

Pop September 28, 2010 at 7:23 am

I refuse to be a fairy blogmother, out of principle. If anyone needs a blog daddy, I’d do a perfectly haphazard job.

Love this concept! Bloggers truly are such a wonderful community, sharing technical information and support.

kludgymom September 28, 2010 at 9:28 am

I agree. When I first started blogging, I was extremely competitive and didn’t realize how big the community aspect of blogging really was. I quickly learned that it really is a give in order to get sort of endeavor!

*standing round of applause*
I personally have had a couple of godmothers that seemed to have come out of nowhere. And I am eternally grateful.

Thank you for the work you are doing for our community of bloggers, for inspiring us each to be better and share the love.

kludgymom September 28, 2010 at 9:31 am

It’s my pleasure. go forth and pay it forward!

Dalia September 28, 2010 at 8:01 am

Love the fairy blogmother concept. You are very right. We all need someone out there who ‘gets it’. Some people are lucky to have other bloggers in real life, but others are not. Having someone who gets it makes all the difference.

kludgymom September 28, 2010 at 9:32 am

I think it can be the difference as to whether you stay with this endeavor or give up.

Such a great concept! I have had several people help me as I have been blogging, and I am so grateful. I’m still what I would call a newbie, maybe medium, blogger, but without the help of some people, I would never have had the courage to continue on in the blogosphere!

I’ve seen you paying it forward already – numerous times during B2SB2B. You have a lot to offer the blogging community and I for one am so glad to have met you during this challenge!

Jill @ Single Mom on a Budget September 28, 2010 at 8:45 am

Thank you bloggy fairy godmother. :)

So. Very. True.

Thanks Gigi!

Natalie September 28, 2010 at 9:13 am

The truest part about this is that sometimes it happens naturally, and I’m glad mine happened that way!

This is a great post. I remember reading it the first time, but this time I got more out of it.

I agree. Mine happened naturally as well. I think it does, most of the time!

I want a fairy blogmother!

Just no idea who it would be.

And I don’t think I’ve earned my tiara yet, so I shoudn’t be anyone else’s yet.

I can help with the writing aspect of it, but the blog development part of it? I still hit the wrong buttons half the time. ;)

I think you could be an awesome fairy blogmother to someone who wants to be a better writer. You’re in my top 10 list for bloggers who just.write.awesomely.

You need to find someone who needs writing help but is good technically, and then you can trade off :)

The Flying Chalupa September 28, 2010 at 10:11 am

Boy, that Empress really gets around! But isn’t she just THE BEST? She is the sole reason I have more than 5 followers. Love this B2S/B2B challenge that you’re doing and although I didn’t get a jump on it at the right time, I need to go back and pore over the posts. I think they could really help.

Yuliya September 28, 2010 at 10:45 am

I’m willing to bet a pumpkin or two that the good Empress has served as fairy blogmother to many a blogger. She and you (with this fantastic challenge) have redefined what blogging is (at least for me) Thank you both for all you do!

Kludgymom – you are a fairy blogmother on steroids. We don’t see all the time you are putting into this work – even an uber-efficient goddess like you that can make 26 hours out of 24 – are putting in some miles on your pc and we are all grateful to you. Many thanks!

AmyBlam September 28, 2010 at 12:20 pm

YOU have helped me so much miss gigi!

Kat September 28, 2010 at 1:39 pm

I have a couple of fairy blogmothers for sure. I have learned so much and gotten a lot of support from some truly great bloggers like you Gigi! Thanks!

I still consider myself a new blogger so I do my best to help when I can but I don’t think I am at the fairy blogmother stage yet. :)

Thanks for the great post. I love the idea of a blog fairy godmother. It’s great to feel like someone is supporting you and cheering you on even without technical or writing support. I really appreciate all the work you have put into B2SB2B. I haven’t had a chance to take advantage of it yet (life has gotten in the way), but I’m looking forward to this week’s assignment and getting caught up.

Love this concept! I am not sure where I stand…probably somewhere in the middle. There are so many people that have helped me and I am so grateful! It would be a honored if someone actually thought I was their fairy blogmother :)

Erin Margolin September 28, 2010 at 2:38 pm

LOVE this idea!!! I don’t know if I am anyone’s fairy blogmother, but I would love to be! I am always trying to share great posts on Twitter, Facebook, etc… I think it’s a wonderful concept. And on that note, I’m going to share this on Twitter.

So true. It is stressful being the ‘fairy blogmother’ to that many people?

That picture of a fairy scares the crap out of me and I don’t know why. It’s like when I get really creeped out while watching the Banana Splits opening sequence.

I used to hide my head under the covers as a kid when that show came on at night. Scary stuff.

Thank you for being Fairy Godmother, even if just for a little bit.

I want to have a Fairy Godmother…and I want to be a Fairy Godmother to someone else. Kind of like a three generations of blogging (<—I think that might make zero sense outside of my mind but I am leaving it there anyway). Love this idea.

Oooohhhh – a Fairy Blogmother is just what I need about now. Maybe some day when I grow up, I can be a FB too. I love the concept of passing it forward.

You need to be the president of the Fairy Blogmother Society because you share so much vital blogging info to all of us newbies. Thanks so much!

I’ve noticed this happening naturally in the last few months between myself and several new bloggers. None of us have huge #’s but we give each other support.
I’ve been hesitant to put myself out there and ask for guest posts. I’m an extrovert but I feel awkward piping up. Your point is good, I need to go and ask!

Joy September 29, 2010 at 2:04 pm

I love the idea of a fairy blogmother! At a recent bloggers conference I attended one of the speakers talked about how guest posting was a great way to reach a larger audience. I never thought about asking someone to guest post on their site. I always just assumed they would approach me if they liked what they read. I am so glad I found you through SITS.

Visiting from the Stumble Upon hop. What an awesome idea. I do need a Fairy Blogmother. You know, I think I may already have one or two. As you described this role I thought to myself, ‘I’m lucky, because I have one or two die-hard fans that I met on Twitter.” These two ladies support me, and some. I’m so grateful!

Brenna @ Almost All The Truth March 23, 2011 at 1:50 pm

What a great idea! I think that is why bloggers that are involved in a community do better and feel better about their blogs. Love the reminder that as you go along your journey, you need to stop and help out the new bloggers along the way.
