Evo Conference ’11: The Highs, The Lows And The OMG Scaries

by kludgymom on July 11, 2011

This is my wrapup of the highs and lows of Evo ’11.

High Points of Evo ’11:

1. Fantastic sessions. I really enjoyed Dennis from The Next Corner‘s 3-hour workshop on SEO. He is a wealth of knowledge and sincerely wanted to help every last person in the room. And, he talked to Natalie and I for over an hour at the Friday night party about more in-depth SEO stuff. I can’t recommend this guy highly enough. So generous.

I also loved Danielle Wiley and Carol Schiller‘s workshop on pitch writing. It was totally hands-on – write a pitch DURING the session and have one of them critique your work. Intimidating, but hugely helpful.

2. Fantastic keynotes.  All of the speakers were really amazing, but the closing keynote, delivered by Me Ra Koh, was staggeringly beautiful. Listening to her speak was worth the price of the conference pass all by itself.  You can watch her keynote here.

3. Nature’s Path and McDonald’s. I loved the people from Nature’s Path foods…they were so nice and put on a fabulous healthy breakfast that I really appreciated.  McDonald’s had a great suite and I thought their Asian chicken salad was yummy…and so were their new mango pineapple smoothies. I am all about the food.

4. Casual vibe. I liked that this conference was really low-key, people weren’t glammed up. It was relaxing to not stress over wardrobe!

5. Every meal was provided.  Thank you, Evo team!!! Dinner was included every night. Loved not having to worry if we were going to be invited out to dinner by anyone! And who wants to make reservations and truck out for a food after a long day of sessions?

7. Meeting my buddy. Getting to spend the weekend with my buddy Natalie from Mommy of a Monster was awesome. She is a great person and we had so much fun.

Low Points of Evo ’11:

1. Facebook session: I felt this session was directed at a different audience than was in attendance. I think many of the tips were more for people who had never set up a Facebook fan page and much of it had a brand perspective v. a blogger perspective.  The brand perspective, from Circle of Moms and Southwest Airlines, was fascinating, but I would have liked to see more tactics and information about growing that aspect of my own blog.

2. Location of sponsor suites. The sponsors each had their own hotel suite, so you had to leave the session area and truck up into the hotel to talk to sponsors. It made it a bit more difficult, and I never actually got up to the suites during the day. I prefer more of a dedicated expo area. Because I’m lazy.

3. Zip line. That I missed out on riding it is my biggest regret of the conference :)

The OMG Scaries of the Conference

The biggest OMG SCARY moment of the conference was when Natalie, myself and The Working Mom got on a gondola to ride allllllll the way up the mountain to attend the closing party. All three of us? Afraid of heights. So you can imagine that when the gondola stopped dead in its tracks for several minutes, then began blowing viciously from side to side due to high winds, we were lining up to be the First Bloggers Ever To Wet Their Pants For A Reason Other Than Laughter At A Conference.

We looked up the mountain and were relieved that we were almost to the top, though. So when the gondola finally began moving again, imagine our surprise when it crested and we were staring down into a tree-covered abyss – a giant ravine that the gondola had to traverse with the wind still blowing.

We all kept our minds off the fact that we were about to throw up by tweeting incessantly.

Park City Gondola Going Over RavineIf you can’t see my tweet, it says HOLY EFF.

But I would be remiss if I didn’t add one final high to the conference – and that was being hired by Clever Girls Collective to represent them at Evo. It was fantastic to tell people about the great things Clever Girls Collective does, especially in light of some spirited conference discussions about when and how bloggers are compensated. I was proud to say I’m part of a network that seeks to have bloggers work authentically AND be paid fairly. And, it was fab to meet Sheila.

Clever Girls!I highly recommend Evo. Learned a ton, had a great time.

The conference sure sounded and looked like fun!

Just reading about the gondola ride made me ill (scared of heights too), hehe.

So wish I could attend one.

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:48 am

They make such a difference in your blogging, I can’t recommend them highly enough!

Jen July 11, 2011 at 8:41 pm

That is totally scary…. glad you lived to tell about it.

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:48 am

I’m still shaking. :)

Missy | The Literal Mom July 11, 2011 at 8:52 pm

It’s nice to live vicariously through your experience. Thanks for sharing! I’m SO getting to a conference in 2012.

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:48 am

I hope we have a chance to meet at one next year!

joann mannix July 11, 2011 at 9:05 pm

OMG, when you said scary moment, I thought, for sure, it would be something along the lines of running into an intimidating blogger or even worse, not having a blow dryer in your room, but that? That? THAT? Would have had me on the floor of the gondola in a sobbing heap.

I’m so glad you enjoyed the conference and even happier that you have become such an amazing blogger. Not that you weren’t always an amazing blogger, but the amount of knowledge you’ve culled and the heights you’ve reached, so happy for you. Go Geeg!

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:49 am

Hi gal! So glad you stopped by…I love hearing from you. Let’s catch up via email soon. xoxo

Poppy July 11, 2011 at 9:23 pm

Call me a selfish bitch, but if you’re going to die tragically can it be after Blogher so I can at least meet the Dynamic Duo first? Great recap as always Gigi, I can always count on you for great info!

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:49 am

I love you Poppy! LOL. I cannot WAIT to have a cocktail or five with you at BlogHer!!!!

JDaniel4's Mom July 11, 2011 at 9:35 pm

This souns like an amazing conference! The sessions really sound great!

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:49 am

they’re putting alot of the info up on the Evo website…check it out!

Anne July 11, 2011 at 9:36 pm

It was great to meet you, Gigi.

I agree with all your high points. I was in the 1-hour SEO workshop the next day. Same stuff crammed into one third the time. Actually, half the time since Dennis stayed an extra half-hour into lunch to get all the info in and answer questions. Worth the whole cost of the event.

I was already up at the Lodge when they stopped the gondolas. I asked if it was because of high winds and an employee said no, because of THE LIGHTNING. (I tell you this now because you are off the mountain.)

I was so interested in hearing about the Clever Girls and look forward to checking it out.

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:50 am

OMG OMG OMG. lightning. I can’t even think about it!!!

It was SO great to meet you in person and be able to chat at the session. Hope to see you again soon, Anne!

angela July 11, 2011 at 10:34 pm

1) You do a fabulous wrap-up. It sounds like a great conference, and you’re so honest about both the positives and negatives while still being respectful of the organizers.

2) You all look gorgeous.

3) I might not have survived the fear of the gondola ride. For real.

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:50 am

You need to get to one of these conferences soon!

Jennifer (TheWorkingMom) July 11, 2011 at 10:57 pm

As it is with these things, I find our whole experience incredibly entertaining… NOW. My one regret would have to be that I didn’t get a picture taken with you guys – maybe with a sign that read “We survived the gondola ride from hell!”

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:51 am

You’re right, we totally needed to get a picture. We were too busy taking photos of the WOW sign. :)

Alexandra July 11, 2011 at 11:05 pm

Gigi, how in the WORLD did you make it through that mountain range?

I would’ve had a panic attack.

I would’ve just missed the closing party.

AIN”T nothing that would’ve gotten me up there.

NOTHING.

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:51 am

If Nat, jennifer and I could do it, you could do it.

All is made better with a glass of wine.

Jennifer July 12, 2011 at 11:55 am

Speak for yourself! One glass of wine wasn’t good enough for me to get me back down the mountain! Many were needed – and I made a total fool of myself in the process. Thankfully I was hanging with the WordPress.com people and they were very forgiving (and probably will be laughing at how silly I was for some time to come!)

Julie {Angry Julie Monday} July 12, 2011 at 12:13 am

I am very envious!! I wanted to go very bad but I’m low on vacation time at work. Sigh..

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:51 am

Sorry you weren’t there too. I’m anxious to finally meet you…but I assume you wouldn’t miss BlogHer!!!

Julie {Angry Julie Monday} July 13, 2011 at 1:28 pm

Heck no. I will be at BlogHer!

blueviolet July 12, 2011 at 7:01 am

I am SO glad that we had a few minutes during that session break to chat because doggone it, that’s about all we had! We were always on different schedules. I had to get my dinner, you had to get a ticket to the zipline, and so on…. CRAP!!!!! But I did get a chance to talk to you enough to know that I really like you!

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:52 am

Likewise…we HAVE to carve out a dinner or something at the next conf…you’ll be at Blogher, right?

Kristin @ What She Said July 12, 2011 at 8:07 am

Seriously? People get glammed up at these conferences? I mean, I always see Pinterest boards dedicated to BlogHer fashion, but I didn’t realize that these things were like a mini-Fashion Week. That certainly ups the intimidation factor.

I always love reading your conference recaps. That pitch letter session sounded AH-mazing. Off to check out both of those ladies’ sites.

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:53 am

The fashion discussions are out of control for BlogHer. Evo was so relaxed. I loved it.

Mrs. Jen B July 12, 2011 at 9:14 am

I cannot overstate this: I would have died of fright. If not, I would have kissed the ground when we got back. But probably would have died.

I’m off to watch the keynote now! Thanks for providing the link!

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:53 am

YOU, Jen, must watch that keynote. It’s long, but push through. I swear to God. I feel like I was meant to go to that conference JUST to hear that keynote.

Rachel {at} Mommy Needs a Vacation July 12, 2011 at 9:37 am

So glad you had an awesome time! Now it is count down time to BlogHer baby!!! Can’t wait to meet you!

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:54 am

Bring the bling string baby!!!!!

MommaKiss July 12, 2011 at 9:46 am

oh what i wouldn’t give to have seen you chicks on that gondola.

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:54 am

No winds nor lightning nor scary gondola could stop us from tweeting. :)

Missy @ Wonder, Friend July 12, 2011 at 10:53 am

Sounds like a good one!!

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:54 am

it.was.fab.

I miss you!

kludgymom July 12, 2011 at 11:52 am

Yeah, I heard the FB session at Type A was awesome and since I give FB no attention, I had hoped this would be equally valuable!

Christina July 12, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Gigi,
This was a great recap! I lived vicariously through you all via Instagram. It looked like an amazing conference. I was curious about how many were in attendance. It appeared to be a more intimate event.

julie gardner July 12, 2011 at 12:59 pm

I’m so sad I wasn’t there on the gondola.

I am not afraid of heights. Or lightening.

I would’ve let you lovely ladies cling to me. ;-)

Shell July 12, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Sounds like a great time!

OMG, I would freak out on that gondola- I’m scared of heights!

Carol Schiller July 12, 2011 at 4:09 pm

This post was so much fun to read! It was a great way to re-live the wonderful weekend – even the scary gondola ride.

Thanks for the shout out for our session. We really wanted to provide useful, practical information.

Oh, and I totally agree with you about the food. Not only was it delicious – but the no-pressure part was great too.

Now we just have to unpack!
Carol (@cozifamily)

Nichole July 12, 2011 at 4:28 pm

I’m so happy that you had such a great time, Gigi.
EVO is on my list for next year. I must go.
Looking forward to meeting you in person in just 3 weeks. :)

Grumpy Grateful Mom July 12, 2011 at 5:26 pm

Looks like so much fun! I used to work at a ski resort in Park City. It’s beautiful there. I think the facebook session would have been helpful for me!

By Word of Mouth Musings July 13, 2011 at 1:06 am

We did a vacation out there when my oldest was just four – they had private instructors for the kids and they took them to the top of the mountain – on that … I looked up and saw my little cherub dangling her feet over in her little red ski jacket and thought I was going to faint!
great recap, any idea where it will be next year?

Kelly July 14, 2011 at 10:13 am

OMG!! I can’t even imagine getting stuck on that!!! I hate to ride those things to begin with…I had no idea when I liked it on IG, that you were STUCK!!!!

You girls are so brave!!

I have heard nothing but really good things surrounding this conference. I will have to put it on my radar!

Raejean July 17, 2011 at 10:57 am

I’m glad we sat at the same table for the Business of Blogging workshop. You were fun to talk too. I love the honesty of your post. It was a great conference, even if everything wasn’t perfect.

jyl johnson pattee July 17, 2011 at 11:24 am

So glad you made it through the gondola ride! We loved having you at the conference. It was so great to see you here. Thanks for your feedback!

xoxo

Tonya July 18, 2011 at 6:08 pm
