Join Me For Back To School, Back To Blogging

by Gigi Ross on August 18, 2010

Welcome to the “big announcement”. I’m about to take a little leap here, and I hope you come along for the ride.

As most of you know, a lot of mom/dad/chick bloggers took ProBlogger’s 31 Days To Build a Better Blog challenge this summer.  Some of you probably did it. I REALLY wanted to do it, only I couldn’t.

I have school age kids who are at home with me all summer long, screaming and fighting and wanting to be entertained every second of the day. There was just no way I could do a task every single day.

Between BlogHer and not doing the 31 days challenge, I was feeling a little left out.

I hate feeling left out. But I thought, “Maybe there are other bloggers out there who couldn’t do a summer challenge. Why can’t we do our OWN thing?

Well, we can!  I’m launching a blog improvement program and I’m looking for some peeps to join me. So I proudly introduce:

What Is It? It’s called Back to School, Back to Blogging (or, B2S/B2B) It’s for anyone who wants to improve their blog. Kids go back to school, we go back to blogging. I hope to make this program:

FUN – because blogging should be!

EASY – because I don’t have time to do a blog task EVERY day. And you might not, either.

FREE – because money is tight and most of us aren’t making a red cent blogging.

INCLUSIVE – because everyone can improve their blog!

How Will It Work? B2S/B2B is a mini-course. It runs for 6 weeks – but don’t worry! There is not an obligation every day. Each week has a different topic, and within that week, we’ll be using the concept of Read ~ Write ~ Share to help each other along. It works like this:

Read: at the start of each week, there’ll be a couple of short reading assignments – blog posts here on KludgyMom, including some FAB guest posters. The reading will prep you for the Write/Share tasks later in the week. You’ll have 2-3 days to do the reading.

Write: based on the reading, you’ll have a topic to write about – only once per week.

Share: after everyone writes on the weekly topic, we’ll share our ideas and best practices in either my KludgyMom BlogFrog community or via social media tools like Facebook, StumbleUpon or Twitter.

If you’re a real overachiever, I’ll also have “extra credit” reading and resources each week. :)

Some of the topics we’ll cover are:

Week 1: Site Improvement

Week 2: Writing

Week 3: Networking

Week 4: Working with Followers

Week 5: Stats and Tools

Week 6: Optional Bonus Week – a week where we explore one of the other topics in more depth

Back to School, Back to Blogging will start the week of September 12 and run through October 22.  There will be a couple of prep tasks to do the week before we start, but they’ll be easy.

Are You A Professional Blogger, KludgyMom? No. I can’t claim a million followers and I am not an expert, but I’ve been around this Internet block a time or two. I read a ton. I love figuring out how to do things myself and sharing that knowledge. Think of me as a facilitator – nothing more, nothing less. The real learning should be community-driven. I hope you can be part of that community!

How Do I Participate? It’s easy to take part. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Join my BlogFrog community

2. Register for the event here, so I can keep track of who’s participating and add you to an email/Twitter list (no spam!).

3. Wait for the pre-work to be posted and/or emailed to you!

I’m really excited about this challenge, and I hope that you’ll join me for one or more weeks! It’s totally flexible! I’d also love for you to tell your bloggyfriends about this challenge via your blog, Twitter or Facebook.

Thank you again, readers, for all of your lovely support and comments every day of the week. I hope you find this helpful and fun!

Miel Abeille August 18, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Brilliant idea! I love it! Definitely registering.

Melissa (Confessions of a Dr.Mom) August 18, 2010 at 11:37 pm

What a wonderful idea Gigi. Can I still register even if I did the 31DBBB(I’m still behind on that anyway)? This sounds pretty innovative and I would love to take part :)

gigi927 August 19, 2010 at 7:39 am

of course you can! I haven’t read 31DBBB so I am not sure how much overlap there will be in material – I think it will be mostly different stuff or at least a different angle. Would welcome any knowledge that you and any of the other 31DBBB gals have, too!!

Natalie August 18, 2010 at 11:40 pm

Looking forward to Weeks 1 & 5 for sure!

As for BF….how was I not already following your community?! I am now :)

Missy August 18, 2010 at 11:43 pm

I registered… I think! The screen went all blinky and it’s possible I registered 1.5 times. If you don’t see me on your list, let me know.

Can’t wait!

Rachel August 18, 2010 at 11:45 pm

Unfortunately, I have to skip out because I’m one of the ones going back to school. Darn.

Alexandra August 18, 2010 at 11:51 pm

Oh, geeg, technodunce here. I’m with Missy. Can’t tell if I joined your blogfrog or not. I went to it, but nothing happened. Please let me know if I’m not registered, b/c of course I WANT TO BE PART OF THIS!

Awesome idea, I will prepare a post for it next week.

This is great, Geeg. I love the B2S/B2B.

Thanks for this, you are a creative master.

Jamie August 19, 2010 at 12:11 am

I am so in xD, can’t wait!

MamaOnDaGo August 19, 2010 at 12:38 am

My kids don’t go to school. Well there’s preschool, but that’s only 2x a week for 3 hours. Between a 3 year old and 1 year old, working full-time, and trying to keep this house together, I’m willing to try. Please remember, I know nothing about the Internet. I’m hoping to learn something new but in a gentle, easy fashion, please.

Heather August 19, 2010 at 12:42 am

Headed there to register now.

blackhuff August 19, 2010 at 1:04 am

Great idea

Maureen August 19, 2010 at 5:00 am

I’m in, I’m in, I’m in 😀 This sounds like so much fun.

Kristin @ Peace, Love and Muesli August 19, 2010 at 6:16 am

I, too, shall join! But if it’s alright I won’t be writing posts about it. Can I still play?

gigi927 August 19, 2010 at 7:38 am

Of course you can! I want it to be flexible. Note: some of the writing tasks will be based on writing prompts and the subject matter will NOT be blogging, so you may have an interest in those.

Ash August 19, 2010 at 7:59 am

You amaze me. I’m still back on Day 12 of 31DBBthingy – at least my path to hell is paved. I think I can handle your schedule though. If not, I’ll owe you a drink in Austin.

(joined the BF community, off to register)

liz August 19, 2010 at 8:49 am

I signed up for 31DBBB and it was so popular/big that I didn’t really do it. So I still kinda need to work through those steps, but is it OK if I register with you and somewhat participate? I only say that because I don’t know that I can full do all of it, and I still need to work through the ProBlogger thing.

gigi927 August 19, 2010 at 1:58 pm

no prob! I hope to get through 31DBBB myself someday!

AmyBlam August 19, 2010 at 9:23 am

You always have the best ideas, I am so in!

Natalie August 19, 2010 at 9:38 am

This is a GREAT idea!

Jackie August 19, 2010 at 10:09 am

I did (still doing) the #31DBBB and found it hard to keep up! I work full time and have 4 kids! I don’t know how I even keep up with anything all!
But I’m in! Someday I’ll be able to quit my job and live off the money I make on my blog… hahahaha!
I do want to improve it and any help would be great!

MommaKiss August 19, 2010 at 10:12 am

Well, since my summer and fall and winter and spring are all the same [me-off to work, kids – off to daycare] the ‘summer slump’ wasn’t my excuse (sad, huh?)

I’m going to follow along though! You’re so innovative and I Luff ya!!

Lori @ In Pursuit of Martha Points August 19, 2010 at 10:18 am

Moi aussi, mademoiselle!

McKenzie August 19, 2010 at 10:40 am

I registered! Hope I don’t have to have children in school to participate haha.

Liz August 19, 2010 at 11:56 am

I’m in! Perfect timing and I love the pace. I really liked how the forum on Blog Frog kept everything in one place & was easy to refer to…not sure if twitter would have that same ease of reference. Regardless – I’m excited. I joined BF and I’m following here too.

Tonya August 19, 2010 at 2:25 pm

I’m in and I can’t wait.

Surferwife August 19, 2010 at 2:57 pm

I don’t even understand what this shit blog frog is. I know. I march to the beat of my own drum. But I want to participate even though I don’t entirely understand what the fuck is happening.

Whoops. Can I cuss around here?

KLZ August 19, 2010 at 4:28 pm

You are so clever and on top of things.

Cheryl @ Mommypants August 19, 2010 at 4:46 pm

I might try this! Great idea! I still have a child full-time at home, and when i say child, I mean a toddler who enjoys turning on the faucets in the bathroom and making a “pool” in the sink, and the floor, etc. Thanks for setting this up! Oh – I, too, don’t get the whole blog frog thingy.

Joey @ Big Teeth & Clouds August 19, 2010 at 6:02 pm

I have to say I’m impressed that you’re doing this for free. I just had a discussion with my husband where I conveyed to him my feeling that the only way to make money from blogging is to trick other bloggers into buying something that makes them think they will one day make money from blogging.

I also used the phrase “circle jerk”. But I am in a mood today.

I’d love to participate in this, I’m all about trading free advice.

Christina August 19, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Love it Gigi! I will get registered soon.

Bossy Betty August 19, 2010 at 11:17 pm

You da’ bomb baby! I am back to work, so I’ll just watch!

Alexandria August 20, 2010 at 12:47 am

Great idea and I’m completely in!

Evonne August 20, 2010 at 7:23 am

Great idea! I’m willing to give it a shot!

I’m now following your blog and heading to your BF!

Merri Ann August 20, 2010 at 8:04 am

I can’t tell if I’m a member or not … obviously I need this … hopefully I can figure it out before you start.

This is such a great idea.

ZippyChix4 August 20, 2010 at 10:04 am

I am headed off to sign up now! Thanks GiGi.

Harriet August 21, 2010 at 10:36 am

I’m not a mum and don’t have kids going back to school but I came across your blog and your Back to Blogging concept seems like a really good idea! I’m definatley gonna try it for when I go back to university, its easy to forget blogging when you’re at uni!

Tina @ Life Without Pink August 21, 2010 at 4:11 pm

OK since I couldn’t attend Blogher or participate in the 31 day challenge, I’ll try this! Sounds fun, easy and something that would benefit me. Count me in!

Hanan August 22, 2010 at 1:56 am

This looks awesome! Im totally signing up with ya girl! Thanks!!

Tisha August 22, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Terrific idea – can’t wait! :-)

Diane August 23, 2010 at 9:19 am

How many of these folks are local? Would be a great excuse for a cocktail kickoff!!!

alicia August 26, 2010 at 10:55 pm

Sounds fun Gigi. Give me a couple days to get caught up, if that is even possible. Haha.

Elle August 29, 2010 at 9:18 am

I love this idea, but I hate blog frog. Do I have to use blog frog? I dread that

gigi927 August 29, 2010 at 9:20 am

haha. Well, you don’t have to use your own BlogFrog but my BlogFrog is where we’ll be sharing all of our tips and ideas. So if you want to opt out of that part, you could just comment on the posts I put up. I won’t put you in detention :)

Mrs.Mayhem August 30, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Sounds like fun! I’d love to participate!

Ashley @ Just Another Mom of 2 September 4, 2010 at 2:54 pm

I love this idea! I tried (and failed miserably) to do the 31DBBB Challenge, but it was just not possible with summer and all we had going on. This looks like fun, I will try to join in!

Susie @ A Slice of My Life September 8, 2010 at 12:04 am

Wow…really? I’m so in.

The frogblog, twitter…it’s all so overwhelming to me. Thank you for doing this!

Jessica September 8, 2010 at 3:43 pm

I’m one of those that’s going back to school, as you know. However, once I read that there’s really not THAT many obligations along the way, you had me hooked.

It’s not too late to join you, is it?! I know you’ve already posted tons of information, so I’m anxious to jump on the bandwagon.

One question: is it against the rules to NOT create a Facebook page? I want my blog to be known about, but I don’t know that I want to jump to that status quite yet. It’s too close to personal life for comfort.

Let me know, Kludgy!
