Resources and Tutorials for Adding Twitter and Facebook Like Buttons To Your Blog

If you’re here from the B2S/B2B Prework Post, great! This is your list of tutorials and resources to help you add retweet buttons, or Facebook “Like” buttons to your blog.  I’ve organized it by blog platform type: Blogger, WordPress.com (free WordPress) and WordPress.org (self-hosted).

If you just stumbled upon this post, hi. We’re right in the middle of gearing up for a 6 week minicourse on blog improvement called Back To School, Back To Blogging. You’re welcome to join us. It’s free, easy and low-pressure. You can go here for more information on it and learn how to register. We begin the course on September 12!

To all Twitterphobes: if you want a beginner’s guide to Twitter to use throughout the challenge, get a download copy of my free e-book, Getting Over Your Fears…of Twitter.

Blogger Users:

To install the TweetMeme button on your site,  Anshul Dudeja wrote this great tutorial called How To Add ReTweet Buttons to Your Blogger Posts . Or, Solid Blogger has a nice step-by-step walkthrough as well, entitled How To Add Twitter (Retweet) Button To Every Blogger Post.

If you want to add a Facebook “like” button to your blog, bloggerplugins.org has a great tutorial called Adding a Facebook Like/Recommend Button for Blogger.

Finally, a handy tool for being able to Tweet other people’s posts even if THEY don’t have a retweet button on their site. Grab the Twitter Share Bookmarklet.

WordPress.com Users:

To install the TweetMeme button, go here to download a special plugin created for WordPress.com users. And here’s more info about the plugin from its creator, Scott.

For a Facebook “like” button added to your posts, check out Get Social’s Social Bookmarks.

For WordPress.org Self-Hosted Users:

To install TweetMeme, use this TweetMeme plugin. Install like a normal plugin. Very easy!

For a Facebook “like” button on your posts, use either: Facebook “Like” Plugin  or Facebook “Like Button” plugin.

Ever want to retweet someone’s post who doesn’t have a retweet button? Install this Twitter bookmarklet.

All users: You may hear about Twitter having launched its own “official” Twitter Retweet button a week or two ago. After reading up on this new button, I’m on the fence whether it’s the best solution for you to have your posts retweeted right now. There may still be some problems with it.  Until it’s more of a proven technology, I think I’d still recommend either using TweetMeme or Topsy as your retweet button.  I’ve not included Topsy as part of this tutorial for the purposes of keeping this simple, but you are welcome to look into it.

Even tho I’m like in detention at school [not a registrant] I can still comment, right? And read along? Don’t call my mom and tell her I’m breaking the rules! [p.s. i'm NOT a fan of the new RT function. At All.]

thanks, we’re still in tweaking mode on the design but we’re at about 70% right now. Wrist is much better, thank you! :)

Hey woman with beautiful new blog!

Wordpress.com now has a sharing tab in the dashboard that has options for re-tweeting, facebook sharing, digg, stumble, etc. (No tumbler yet.)

You can pick which sharing options you want, and then pick wether they’re visible in just the posts or on the index pages too.

PS – I only knew about the Twitter one until just now when I went to look and find where it was so I could tell you. Then lo and behold! they’re ALL there. (And I know they weren’t a week or two ago when I activated the re-tweet button.)

Thank you for the info. But it sounds like you’d have to be in your WP.com dashboard to do the retweet, right? and that would be of your own post, not someone else’s post? It doesn’t sound like that gets you entirely where you’d want to do..unless I am misunderstanding?

Prework complete! With the exception of adding the Facebook “like” button. Had a problem finding the HTML codes on the site you linked to. Any suggestions?

kludgymom September 6, 2010 at 12:28 pm

Here’s the code you need. It was right in the middle of the article I listed. :)

Retweet this button on every post blogger

kludgymom September 6, 2010 at 12:34 pm

oops, that didn’t show up right. it just displayed the image! If you go back to the article, copy and paste the “digg like” code and that’s what you’ll get.

My computer’s in a funk right now or rather, I’m in a computer funk so when I tried to add the retweet button I somehow screwed up. It did make me feel computer literate while I tried. Very helpful post – thanks!

Tammy September 6, 2010 at 12:21 pm

OK, this doesn’t bode well … I am stuck on the retweet buttons. I cannot find the “expand widgets” on Blogger. Anyone who can help??

go to Design > Edit HTML. Then under “Edit Template” will be a little checkbox at the top that says “expand widgets”.

Then you can use Control-F to use the find feature in the code to put the Retweet code where you need it :)

Regarding the ReTweet buttons, I think the new official Twitter buttons is more customizable and better looking than retweet’s. Just my 2 cents.

The new Twitter button may be more customizable but I’ve read at least 3 different articles from 3 different and highly successful social media people who say #1 that it’s not counting Retweets as accurately as topsy or Tweet Meme and #2 that when you click on it to read the history of the tweets it’s not coming up with anything searchable. I had originally included it in this article and then decided to pull it because I don’t think the technology is quite mature enough yet especially for beginning bloggers for whom every retweet matters :)
