A Great Stocking Stuffer!

by Gigi Ross on November 29, 2010

There’s nothing like returning home from a glorious California vacation to a pile of mail…except when the mail is full of fun packages and products to review. Yesterday, Battle of the Giants: Dinosaurs Strike for the Wii arrived. I had an opportunity through the wonderful Clever Girls Collective to try out this game.

It’s a good thing, too, because Boy Wonder was still pouting over the fact that his sister got Petz: Fantasy for DS a few weeks ago.

We popped the game in right away. While it loaded, I asked my son what he thought the game would be about. He said, “This is when the dinosaurs “fighted” way back then. Then they escape to a new planet because the volcano erupted.”

5 year-old Little CEO was crabby, and said, “I don’t think I want to play this game.”

Her attitude changed quickly when she saw the game load up onto the screen. Boy Wonder had navigated to “customize your dinosaur” and she’ll jump on the chance to glam up any sort of prehistoric creature.

After pimping out a T-Rex, we took a look at what battle options there were. The kids tried Tag Team mode first. This allowed them to play with and against the computer on teams, either cooperatively or against each other. Surprisingly, they played together as a team. They loved the graphics and the slow-mo effects when a dinosaur would launch a big strike on its opponent.

I was pleased that Little CEO, despite not being much of a gamer, was actually out-fighting Boy Wonder. The dinosaurs’ fighting moves are easy to maneuver with the Wii remote and when you enter Strike Mode, you have to match a series of moves, kind of like you do with Guitar Hero.

Little CEO mastered the block move and they both laughed hysterically as she hid from her opponent and then would launch a massive strike when the other dinosaur least expected it.

In fact, the whole family was screaming and yelling the whole time we played this game – in a good way. Boy Wonder would scream, “You’re doing down, sorry buddy!” and when he’d lose most of his life, he’d switch to Little CEO to come in and clean up the mess.

The violence level on this game was really low. It’s rated Everyone – 10+ but when the dinosaurs get hit there is no gore, blood, etc. It was fine for my two kids and did not scare Little CEO at all (who scares easily).

Boy Wonder also tried Domination Mode, where one player tries to defeat a series of progressively more challenging dinosaurs. As you beat opponents, your dinosaur “evolves” and gains strength, body armor, horns, etc. to make fighting easier in subsequent rounds. This was pretty cool.

I liked how the kids could easily distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of each dinosaur. Boy Wonder said, “Hey, that dinosaur has no horns, but he is super fast and hard to attack.” (Maybe all of this money I spend on Tae Kwon Do is paying off?)

The game reminded me a lot of Super Smash Brothers Brawl, only this game is much easier to control and follow.

All in all, the family had a blast playing Battle of the Giants: Dinosaurs Strike for an afternoon. My only concern with the game is that for serious or more advanced gamers, it might get repetitive after several hours of play. But I’m sure this game will get played by all four of us here at the Ross household!

I’m giving away one copy of Battle of the Giants: Dinosaurs Strike to one lucky winner, so enter below! Or, you can buy it at Toys R Us for $29.99, if you just can’t wait!

Luckily, so far…I’ve adroitly avoided the I Wanna WEEEEEEEEIIIIII! siren call from my kids.

May it always be that way. :)
